Shield (scutum)

The Roman Shield was a long rectangular piece of bronze or copper. It was usually painted with different styles and colors to match the rank of the soldier using it. It was made to protect from your knees to your chin and stop spears and arrows from hitting you. With these shields, it was possible to create what romans called the turtle formation where multiple roman soldiers whould bunch up together and use their shields to create a turtle shell shaped structure.
