The Roman soldiers' equipement and uniform evolved over the centuries and differed from the basic soldier to the Centurion or from the infantry to the cavalry or even the desert warriors. The one thing that never changed and that was part of the success of Rome, is the attention attached to the uniform. Each item was carefully thought about: the material (for example the wool of the tunic to keep them warm anytime), the weight (light and short sword to stab the enemy easily), the design (the soft top of the spear to make it unusable by the opponent) and the location (multiple loops around the belt to find things easily). Some of the pieces were offensive (spears, swords, shoes…) others defensive (shields, helmets…) but they were all part of a professional, standardized and threatening equipment of the Roman soldier.
