Body armor (lorica segmentata)

The body armor was one of the essential piece of the soldiers' uniform. It was designed to be protective as well as allow flexibility. It was made of overlapping iron strips  secured with hooks and laces on the outside and leather strips on the inside. The shoulders were protected by iron curved pieces. A breastplate was worn under the armor, on top of the woolen tunic and attached to the belt. It was an extra protection to protect the heart.
